First Impressions (Tuesday June 15th)

Having only ever traveled in developing countries before I wasn't really sure what to expect here in Israel. Flying in to Tel Aviv was bout like flying in to any city in the US. There was the downtown with the skyscrapers looking very modern and then as you come into the suburbs (complete with track housing!)The airport is very modern, beautiful actually. We got a "sherut" (modern hebrew for taxi)that looked like any airport/hotel shuttle you would catch from SFO or LAX, and took the hour drive to Jerusalem. As we drove on the freeways that put our CA freeways to shame, I started to get a feel for this land. It is beautiful! There were a lot more trees than I'd imagined. I had been a hot day so the air was still warm but not oppressively hot. I am already falling in love with this place. God was right when He told His people "it is a good land".

And Jerusalem! She is beautiful! They are having a festival here called "the Art of light" so there were people out enjoying concerts and performances and the walls of the old city were all lit up. Of course it meant we couldn't get all the way to the school where we are staying (although our taxi driver made a valiant effort!) so we had to walk the last 1/2 mile or so with all our luggage (I've never been so glad for rolling luggage - thank you Dad!!) but it was actually really fun! Being out on the street with all the people! I can still hear the last of the concerts going on all over the city.
